About The Colony Texas
The Colony, Texas is a small suburb located in Denton County with a small but growing population and economy. In recent years, housing and business development has greatly increased. New home construction, entertainment venues, restaurants and local businesses continue opening and have made The Colony one of the best places to live in the Dallas Metroplex.
History of The Colony, TX
It all started with the Peters Colony rebellion, also known as the Hedgcoxe War. In 1852, Texas colonists were outraged when they felt that a real-estate company was trying to invalidate their land claims. Even though a compromise law was passed, the colonists felt that the land company’s agent, Henry Oliver Hedgcoxe, had taken a high-handed approach to settling the matter. It didn’t help either, that the attorney general Ebenezer Allen upheld the law by issuing his opinion, which people saw as him being in favor of the land company.
By July of that same year, Hedgcoxe was accused of fraud and corruption, and the next day, was ordered to leave the colony. He left hastily for Austin the next day. After this event, the compromise law was further amended to satisfy both parties.
In 1969, home developing company Fox and Jacobs purchased land in the area, with the idea of building a desirable residential area. By 1976, there was a move to have the area declared as its own city, and by the next year, The City of The Colony was born. In 1987, the lakeside community of Eastvale merged with The Colony. Progressive land development continues to this day with Nebraska Furniture Mart and TopGolf adding locations to The Colony.
The Colony Five Star Complex
Opened in 2003, this facility covers 80 acres. It is dedicated as a state-of-the-art sports facility, with baseball, soccer, football, and softball fields within its area. True to its Texan heritage, the facilities are still expanding with native stonework and beautiful architectural designs.
The complex also includes playgrounds, pavilions, and hiking and biking trails. A memorial to Veterans of the Armed Services is also present. Named in 2003 as the Sports Illustrated 50th Anniversary Sportstown for the state of Texas, the Five Star Complex serves citizens of the Colony through Community, Culture, Environment, Recreation, and Sports.
