About McKinney Texas

The city of McKinney is built on cotton and agriculture, and because of that, it has become one of the fastest-growing places in the country, with many accolades for its economic stability and overall quality of life.

History of McKinney TX

Collin County and several other areas were carved out of Fannin County in 1846, and Collin County was so named after Collin McKinney who was a land surveyor and pioneer who helped draft the Texas Declaration of Independence from Mexico. However, a new law stipulated that the county’s main city or community should be as close to the geographic center as possible of the county itself, and Buckner, the old seat of the county, didn’t qualify. And so McKinney was created in 1848.

Over the years, the county became known as an agricultural and cotton powerhouse in the region, and the necessities of the city’s operation had it developing buildings, mills and other infrastructure that were needed. By 1889, the city had a basic infrastructural base, telephone lines, newspapers, banks, an opera house, churches, a volunteer firehouse department, and electric lights.

Achievements of McKinney

Employment

McKinney is one of the ten top places in Texas if you’re looking for a job, with well-developed tech, medical and manufacturing industries present.

Highest salary growth rate

McKinney had a 171% increase in income from 1990 to 2010, making it the highest growth rate for all US cities with 50,000 or more people.

Best place to live

In 2012, McKinney received the gold star of approval, as it were, of being the #2 best place to live, according to Money Magazine. This was due to high ratings for developed parks and open spaces, affordable housing, high employment rate, and a vibrant commercial district. The city also scored high for future development, with a new hospital, conference center and hotel area in development.

Natural Entertainment

McKinney also has well-developed parks and recreational facilities, for use by the public – though some facilities will require reservations and possibly fees. There is even an area, Erwin Park, which allows for camping within the city.
